Field Farm Equestrian Centre, located just north of Skegness, near Mumby, Lincolnshire, is a prime destination for horse lovers seeking a comprehensive equestrian experience. Situated on over 60 acres of scenic countryside, this facility is just a little over a mile from the nearest beach, offering an ideal setting for both horse and rider. In mid-June we headed back for our 2024 Field Farm fix!

Field Farm Equestrian Centre, Mumby, Lincs

Field Farm has transformed a former dairy farm into a well-equipped equestrian centre. It boasts a variety of facilities tailored to equestrian needs, including a 1.2-mile cross-country course, a livery yard, and a show jump arena. These features make it an excellent place for training and leisurely rides. The centre also offers beach riding, allowing visitors to enjoy the unique experience of riding along the coast, which is a significant draw for many horse enthusiasts.

Field Farm Accommodation

Accommodation options at Field Farm are diverse, catering to various preferences and group sizes. Options range from lovely cottages like Hill Holt and The Granary to glamping in geodesic domes named Daphne and Dory. There is also the stationary Polyanna narrowboat for those seeking a more novel stay and a number of large caravans.

Field Farm – Other Attractions

In addition to equestrian activities, Field Farm offers other recreational opportunities. There is a coarse fishing lake on-site, which adds to the appeal for families and groups looking for a multifaceted holiday experience. The surrounding area also provides access to local attractions such as the Chapel Point North Sea Observatory and Fantasy Island amusement park, ensuring there’s plenty to do both on and off the farm.

Field Farm Trip 2024

As Field Farm pros, we know from experience that it’s well worth getting on the road early and taking advantage of Field Farm’s excellent Earlybird Arrival deal. Availability for earlybird spaces does depend upon how busy the site is, but even at full capacity, they are still able to accommodate a small number of early arrivals from 1030am for the sum of £15 per horse. Note, this does not equate to early access to accommodation.

Depending on the tide times, that could mean the difference between being able to squeeze another beach ride in during your stay or not.

Given how rubbish the weather has been for most of 2024, we were incredibly lucky with what the Lincolnshire coast served up for us for our visit. We had pretty much wall-to-wall sunshine for the entirety of our four days there.

Field Farm – Beach Riding

For those wanting to visit the beach with their equine friends, it’s about a mile from the Field Farm site, almost entirely hackable off-road until you reach a very short section of (relatively quiet) road just before the beach itself.

Three horses and riders head off down the Field Farm driveway on their hack to the beach.

Ordinarily horse riders are encouraged to make use of the beach at Wolla Bank. On this trip, however, pipework was on-going on the beach, and we were instead directed to Chapel Six Marches, a very short walk to the south.

It’s important to check the tide times before you intend to ride on the beach. As a general rule, it’s safe to do so for a two-hour window either side of low tide. Some days offer this possibility in daylight twice, but during our stay, there was just one opportunity each day. I think low tide was about 1030 on the day we arrived, with it occurring about 40 minutes later each day after that.

Field Farm – Afternoons

While the girls spent time tending to their ponies, cleaning their tack, spending money in the shop or just chilling, my afternoons were spent by the lake, rod in hand. Carp are the species most anglers set out to catch, and Field Farm’s fish are in pristine condition. Over the course of three afternoons, I caught 34 carp, to mid-double figures (I was sure one couldn’t have been far off 20lbs, but apparently the biggest to have come out is 17lbs), plus a few roach & rudd.

If you have an other half who likes to fish, this could be a great selling point towards making your horsey holiday happen!

*Obviously, tide times might mean that you end up fishing at different times of the day to me!

Field Farm – Cross-Country Course

The extensive cross-country course has something for everyone. There are three versions (in terms of size) of most of the jumps on the main course as well as a mini XC. There’s also a bank, ditch and some water, with multiple entry points, which makes for great pictures. And of course, there’s the iconic Field Farm sign hanging over the top of the final brush hurdle.

Field Farm – Outdoor Manege

The showjumping arena measures 40m x 20m and is covered with a lovely pro track surface. There’s a huge variety of jumps available for use covering everything from junior sets through to a working hunter set.

We’ve found that a late-morning/lunchtime beach ride dovetails really well with an early-evening XC or SJ round.

Dress Shoot

We did decide to give the ponies one evening off from proper work, though, as the girls were keen on having a dressy shoot.

I’ve got portable studio lights, which mean the fun doesn’t have to stop when the sun goes down.

Field Farm – Conclusions

As you can probably tell, we LOVE Field Farm. The facilities are excellent, the staff are amazing, the range and standard of accommodation is fab, and the opportunities it provides for rider growth are superb. It really is great to see confidence and trust build between a horse and riding pairing!

Field Farm – Rider Photography Camp

If you like the pictures featured here and would like some of you and your own horse or pony, please send me a message. I have been offered the chance to run a rider photography camp (probably three nights) purely for riders wanting pictures of themselves in each of the scenarios above at Field Farm (possibly later in 2024, but more likely to be 2025), and it’s looking increasingly like it will happen – if the demand is there! Make sure to register your interest!
