Driving around Northamptonshire during the long-winter evenings I’ve noticed lots and lots of illuminated churches, and it’s been my intention for quite a while to have a go at photographing some of them at night.  Finally, last month, I did just that.

Living in the village of Woodford, near Thrapston, I was acutely aware that I would not have to travel far to reach my first target:  All Saints’ Church, Great Addington.

I should perhaps point out that this was one of the windiest nights of the whole winter, so these were all taken hand-held – not that using a tripod would have yielded significantly different results.  The very golden-tinged lighting used at each of the three churches I visited didn’t really work for me, so I’ve gone for black and white conversions throughout.

The second venue I visited was St Peter’s Church, Irthlingborough.  Unfortunately, the perimeter is largely surrounded by trees, so unobstructed views were not possible, and I didn’t hang around.

Finally, I ended up at St Mary’s Church, Wilby.  The overall scene here was without doubt the nicest of the three, but the uneven lighting on the church’s exterior made it almost impossible to expose accurately.

I might well have another go at this before the clocks go forward and spring arrives.
