As anybody in Northamptonshire and surrounding counties will be aware, last Wednesday and into Thursday provided some of the heaviest rainfall we’ve seen in many years, causing widespread disruption and travel chaos.  While I wasn’t out in the worst of it, here are a few before and after pictures of the scene between Thorpe Waterville and Aldwincle.

I had no idea of what was to come when I randomly took a few snaps of the area while on my travels early doors last Monday, but it seems quite appropriate to share them now.

The road between the two villages has a series of bridges passing over the main course of the River Nene, at the Thorpe Waterville end, and Harper’s Brook – one of the Nene’s tributaries – on the Aldwincle side.

Above: The same scene six days later, showing a raised level, markedly increased flow and plenty of standing water in the neighbouring fields.

Just on the south-side of the road also lies a large, seemingly unnamed lake, which is home to a variety of birdlife.

I returned the following Sunday, expecting to see the respective bodies of water swollen, but I didn’t think the road would be under water.  It was pouring off the road and into the fields to the north, too.

From talking to some of the locals, it had evidently gone down an awful lot by this stage – one lady telling me it had been right up to the bridge at its peak.  Who would have thought that the picture could change so dramatically in the course of six days?

It serves as a stark reminder of how powerful Mother Nature can be.

I mainly provide wedding, event and family photography services in Northamptonshire, Leicestershire, Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Rutland, Oxfordshire & Warwickshire, in towns such as Northampton, Kettering, Wellingborough, Oundle, Corby, Peterborough, Leicester, Huntingdon, Rushden, Towcester, Rugby, Daventry & Oakham.  I am, however, only too happy to travel beyond those locations to capture the magic of your day.
