Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials 2022 – Eventing Photography
On Saturday, 3rd September 2022, I made my first ever visit to the Burghley Horse Trials. It was Cross Country day of Land Rover Burghley’s World-famous 5* Three Day Event, which makes up one third of the Rolex Grand Slam of Eventing. Three Day Eventing provides a thorough test of a horse and rider, challenging them in Dressage, Cross Country and Show Jumping disciplines.
Burghley Horse Trials 2022 – Advanced Planning
Whatever I am doing photographically, I like to be able to formulate some sort of plan of action beforehand. Despite the promises of the Burghley Horse Trials website in the run up to the Event that course information would be available in advance, that never materialised. So, I went to Burghley 2022 somewhat blind.
Travelling to Burghley Horse Trials 2022
On the drive there, it became clear it was going to take a while to get in a good few miles from Burghley House itself. Initially, the route the signs were insisting I take made little-to-no sense (I say that as someone who lives about 30 minutes from Stamford), adding many (seemingly) “needless” miles on to the journey, but eventually they would start to become more understandable. There were HUGE numbers of people descending on Stamford’s most famous of landmarks, and the exit off the A1 was in no way sufficient to cope with all of them arriving at the same time. Therefore, the only way to keep the A1 moving to non-BHT traffic was to send them all the long way around. And by long, I mean L-O-N-G.

Burghley Horse Trials 2022 – Cross Country Course
Once, eventually, inside, it soon became clear that the course was absolutely massive. As a first-timer, it would have been handy to have had access to a programme upon leaving the car park, but we wouldn’t find one until much later in the day. We also struggled to get the app to work as advertised. As luck would have it, we happened upon the Trout Hatchery as our starting point and in good time before the action had kicked off.

With that, the day’s action concluded.
Conclusions
It had been an excellent day, there was no disputing that. Photographically it was awesome, and I was really happy with what I came away with.
Looking at the programme that we picked up on our way to Lion Bridge, and while walking back to the car park via a slightly different route to the one taken during the morning, it was obvious there was still a huge amount of the course that we either never saw at all or saw no action over.
I don’t know how much the course changes from year to year, but as a first timer, I couldn’t help but feel a bit gutted that we’d not had more time to explore.
I suppose that just leaves one option…. we’ll have to return in 2023 and see the rest/or whatever’s new! 🙂
