Towcester Racecourse successfully bid for an additional National Hunt fixture on the 10th of November 2016. The weather forecast looked to have potential, and I couldn’t resist heading over with my camera.
Towcester Racecourse
Located around 10 miles from the centre of Northampton, Towcester Racecourse rests in picturesque rural Northamptonshire. It is unique within the UK in that it welcomes the public to view its horse racing and greyhound racing meetings free of charge. Viewing is excellent with two grandstands overlooking the course and ample space to watch horses in pre-parade and parade rings. A big screen is provided to allow visitors a better view of some of the furthest points away from the grandstands.

The additional fixture provided attendees with a seven-race card to enjoy. Current Champion Jockey (and current leading jockey) Richard Johnson was among those present with rides.
The weather forecast changed several times during the 24-hours leading up to the opening race. Essentially it would be a nice day with a persistent risk of heavy showers. As it transpired, it was not until the final race of the day that the course experienced any rainfall, despite black clouds and rainbows being visible in the surrounding areas for most of the afternoon.
2.15 – The Star Sports Daily Specials Novices’ Steeple Chase
The fourth race on the card was a 5-runner Class 3 Novice Chase. The ground was described as ‘Good’.

The market made this a three-horse race with Forest Bihan favourite at 11/8, Zarib second favourite at 7/4 and Pinkie Brown third favourite at 5/2. The three jumped the second last split by less than three lengths, but the Brian Ellison-trained Bihan Forest was absolutely swinging away under Brian Hughes and went on to score comfortably from Pinkie Brown.
