Long-exposure Photographs in Daylight
Long-exposure Photographs in Daylight
I’ve recently added a new item to my photography kit bag. Without getting too technical, it’s a filter that enables me to take long-exposure shots, even on a sunny day. Although the applications are slightly limited, the results, work really well and are quite eye-catching.
The two main types of shot where it can effectively be used are for creating a sense of movement in both clouds and water.
For it to work on clouds, you do need quite a specific set of weather conditions. It needs to be sunny, and the sky really must be predominantly blue. Strong winds also help.
With water, you are looking for either fast-moving stretches or waves and waterfalls. Sadly, there are not too many examples of those things here in Northamptonshire! The use of a long-exposure on these tends to smooth the motion in the water, again creating an effect that I think works well.
Commercial Applications
I can see commercial applications for this. I will always carry the filters with me for wedding photographs, just in case the conditions are conducive for such shots. Additionally, if you have property (either a building or your pride and joy – cars, aeroplanes, things that won’t wander off!) that you would like photographing in this way, please get in touch. I really like the results, and I think they’d look great printed big and hung on a wall! Be aware that we might have to wait for conditions to be right before we attempt to put the vision into reality.
